Run, baby, run: Some of the
822 participants take off in the 5K run/walk
Dinosaur Dash on Sunday on the Michigan State campus.

EAST LANSING - Chris Hughes has won many races over
the years. But in one
race, he continually met with disappointment. Until Sunday.
The 35-year-old Lansing resident finished first of 822 runners and
walkers
in the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union Dinosaur Dash
5K
run/walk. His 3.1-mile time was 15 minutes, 50 seconds.
"This was a goal pretty much from the start of the year," he said.
"I
finally broke 16 (minutes) on this course, and I've got to thank
(fellow
runner) Eric Stuber. He did a lot of the work."
Said Stuber: "Chris had a wait-and-see attitude, so I threw in a
surge about
a mile and quarter in. I probably didn't go as hard as I should
have. I
should have just gone and run scared the rest of the way."
With a furious kick in the last tenth of a mile, Stuber (16:08)
nipped
Roland Hensley of DeWitt (16:09) for second place
and the male masters (over
age 40) title.
"The three of us were in a pack until the 2 1/2-mile mark when Chris
(Hughes) took off," Hensley said. "I tried to follow and got some
space on
Eric, but I should have known better. I should have picked it up
more at the
end. When he came by me, it was too late."
Stuber said his strategy probably wasn't the best choice.
"I just decided that I had worked too hard in the middle part of the
race,
so I gave it all I had," he said.
Nikki Norris-Smith captured her seventh female overall title in 10
Playmakers Greater Lansing Race Series events in 18:18.
"It was challenging because I've been doing spinning (on a
stationary bike),
but not a lot of running," she said. "I realize it's time to start
doing
more running, because I would like to dip under 18 minutes at the
Cold
Turkey Trot."
The Nov. 9 5K, also run on the MSU campus, is the final event in the
2003
race series.
Ten other women broke 20 minutes on Sunday: Julie Wagner of Chelsea
(18:45);
Ann Hallgren of Haslett (18:51); former Williamston High School
standout
Gayle (Bond) Kuipers of Holland (19:12); Kelly Robinson of Holt
(19:12);
Sarah Stornant of Portland (19:28); Rose Willis of Lansing (19:40);
Jordan
Clark of East Lansing (19:40); Amy Clark of East Lansing (19:41);
Lisa
Bignall of Haslett (19:49); and masters champion Maryellen Stornant
of
Portland (19:50).

DECIDING KICK? When Eric Stuber of Lansing nipped Roland Hensley of
DeWitt
for second place overall in the Michigan State University Federal
Credit
Union Dinosaur Dash 5K run/walk on Sunday, it may have decided the
male
masters (over age 40) title for the Playmakers Greater Lansing Race
Series.
Stuber now leads Hensley 77-75 with just the Cold Turkey Trot 5K on
Nov. 9
left in the series.
Hensley is still one point ahead of Stuber (72-72) in the fight for
the male
overall title, but Chris Hughes expanded his lead and now has 80
points
after winning Sunday's race.
Hughes broke 16 minutes and won the Dinosaur Dash 5K after placing
third in
16:00 in 2001 and third in 16:03 in 1999.
The other category still up for grabs is the male grandmasters (over
age 50)
division where James Scholl and James Carlton are tied with 32
points each,
Duane Spitz has 30, Jon Kermiet 27 and Steve Miller 25.
